I am so excited to be offering an aesthetic pruning class in the garden of JM Cellars in Woodinville Washington. The garden is a beautiful collection of mature specimen trees with a rich history. According to the JM Cellars website, in 1965 Jan and her husband Smitty planted over 400 rare conifers and 120 Japanese maples! In 2000 John and Peggy Bigelow purchased the property and with Mary Waren, their head gardener, continue to nurture and develop the garden. The setting is wonderful for events and wine tasting but of course I am biased towards the amazing collection of trees and the opportunity to foster beauty among them.
Join us May 10th 2019 in the beautiful gardens of JM Cellars for a hands-on pruning workshop. With the garden as your classroom, you will learn the aesthetic pruning approach of assessing everything from the health and age of a tree to the current and future design role a tree plays in the garden. The hands-on portion of the workshop will focus on seasonal appropriate pruning and planning for conifers and companion trees such as Japanese maples and mid-story shrubs.
We will start the workshop reviewing best practice pruning cuts as well as the aesthetic pruning process you can apply to any pruning project in any garden style. After our classroom time, we will get hands-on experience pruning trees and shrubs in the JM Cellars garden. This is a great opportunity to assess and develop a pruning plan for a variety of conifers within an established garden.
Coffee and pastries will be provided in the morning but please bring a refillable water bottle for use during the workshop.
All skill levels are welcome.
To get the full benefit of a hands-on experience and instructor feedback, the class size is limited to 8 participants.
After the class you are welcome to enjoy the garden and the JM Cellars tasting room. Tasting opens at 11:00. Woodinville is a short drive away for lunch and is a great place to spend the afternoon.
- Bring your own clippers (by-pass only), gloves, hat, safety glasses, proper clothing and shoes for working outside, water bottle, pencil and notebook.
